1st Place Canarian Slalom Champioships
I just got back from the Canarian Slalom Championships down in Sotavento. That was one of he most interesting experiences. Slalom is a lot more exiting than course racing as a single small mistake can cost you the race. It is also not completely without its dangers. I even managed to get smacked in the face by a flying kite at one of the buoys. That was a new experience for me.
We did 4 Races over he last 2 days. Yesterday we started very late as the Jetski broke down and there was no real support from the Rene Egli Station for the Event. So we had to wait for a mechanic to fix the jetski so we could get the buoys positioned correctly. At around 16.00 we managed to start with the Windsurf Fleet with World Famous Wave sailor and fellow Dakine Team Rider Phillp Köster taking 2 easy wins.
Then finally us kiters got to show our stuff, and so I launched my 10m2 and took my Course Racing board. I was totally overpowered, but that would end up helping me in the end. My fellow Flysurfer Team Rider and Fuerteventura Local Jochen Bock took his 15m2 and a twin tip.
I managed to win the 1st Race Easy with Jochen finishing 3rd.
The 2nd race was a bit more interesting. Already at the start I managed to get into a small tangle with another rider, but managed to get untangled whilst still riding (I still don't know how). I made it to the 1st Buoy ahead to the fleet and managed to gybe, but as soon as I was around the same rider from the start tangled with me again. This time I got ripped off my board. Jochen then took the lead with the other rider right behind him. Then at the 2nd Buoy the same rider again tangled with Jochen, but this time his lines did not take the strain and all 4 of his lines were easily cut by Jochens lines. Meanwhile I managed to get back on my board, but Jochen was already too far ahead for me to catch him.
On day 2 the kite fleet got to start 1st. The wind dropped as we started the 1st Race, and I had the advantage with my Raceboard. The only moment of note is as I rounded the 1st buoy, one of the following riders did not manage to get is kite up in time and smacked me right in the face. I don't know how I managed to stay on the board, but I managed to hold on and finish the race is 1st place. Jochen took 2nd Place.
The Second Race was not so successful for me. I managed a good start, but at the 2nd buoy I slipped as I was gybing and crashed. This let Jochen and another Rider pass me. I managed to catch Jochen but the other rider was just to far ahead and beat me by 5 meters.
In the end it was enough for the 1st Place overall and I am stoked to be the 1st Kite Champion of the Canarian Islands Slalom Championship.
I would like to thank Orlando Lavandera for organizing this Event and making it a fun and sucesful weekend for all who competed.

Also thank you and Congratulations to Paul Hampson and his 4th Place. ;-)
